Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project encompasses all five New York City boroughs with a combined population of more than 8 million.
Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project
Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project is working with Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project to save all of New York's healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats in ten years.
Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project is focused on increasing adoptions and is administered by the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals.
Established in 2002, the Mayor's Alliance is a coalition of animal rescue groups and shelters working with the city of New York to find a home for every cat and dog who needs one. The Alliance includes New York City Animal Care and Control and 106 adoption guarantee organizations.
In each of its grant years, Maddie's Project partners have exceeded their goals for increasing adoptions and decreasing deaths. Since 2003, the city's live release rate has jumped from 37 percent to 72 percent.
New York reached a major milestone in 2009 with an adoption guarantee for all healthy shelter pets. In 2010, the coalition members will extend their adoption guarantee to 30% of the treatable shelter population.
Maddie's® Spay/Neuter Project
The Veterinary Medical Association of NYC administered the program in Years 1 & 2; the Mayor's Alliance in Years 3-6.
Currently, twenty-nine private practice veterinary hospitals and five non-profit clinics are providing spay/neuter surgeries to low-income county residents. The cost of the surgery to owner/caregivers is $10 per cat and $20 per dog. Maddie's Fund is contributing between $25 and $120 per surgery, depending upon species and gender. Clients must show proof of low-income with a Medicaid card and there is a limit of six pets per household.
As of September 30, 2009, 30,858 surgeries have been performed by this project.
